FDA Orphan Drug Designations: 6-Months In Review

This is the first in a series of Blog Posts on the review of the first six months of 2014 for orphan drugs and rare diseases. The first six months of 2014 continues the success for orphan drug development and rare diseases.

This Blog Post will compare the number of FDA Orphan Drug Designations (ODDs) of the first 6 months of 2014 versus the number of FDA ODDs of the first 6 months of 2013. The chart below identifies the number of FDA ODDs in each month of 2013 and 2014.

Observations

•   Increase in the # of FDA ODDs every month from 2013 to 2014, except for January & March 2014

•   Overall increase of approximately 21.8 % in the # of FDA ODDs for the first 6 months from 2013 to 2014.
