Cydan Partners With MassChallenge: Scholarships For Rare Disease Start-Ups

Cydan Development announces March 19th, that it is partnering with MassChallenge, to fund scholarships “to support innovations that improve the lives of patients with rare diseases”.

I – Cydan Development

Cydan Development, an orphan drug accelerator based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, launches in April 2013, with US $16 million financing from :

•   New Enterprise Associates (NEA)

•   Pfizer Venture Investments (PVI)

•   Alexandria Real Estate Equities Inc.

Cydan is an accelerator company for the development of drugs for rare diseases. The accelerator:

“identifies and de-risks orphan drug products with significant therapeutic and commercial potential. Cydan evaluates products for treating rare diseases with high unmet medical need with the goal to start multiple companies to develop such therapies.”    

Cydan’s first spin-off company, Vtesse, is launched in January 2015. Vtesse is developing drugs for Niemann-Pick Disease Type C (NPC) and for other rare diseases.

II – MassChallenge Boston

MassChallenge, located in Boston, Massachusetts, helps early-stage entrepreneurs connect with resources to help them launch and succeed as quickly as possible. Activities include running an annual global accelerator program and startup competition.

III – Scholarships For Rare Disease Acclerator Start-Ups

Cydan and MassChallenge will award $5,000 scholarships to eligible companies participating in the 2015 Accelerator Program. Scholarships are awarded to winning start-ups, before the accelerator starts in June 2015, providing flexibility for participating in the 4-month program. The sponsors provide mentorship and access to resources for the start-ups.
