FDA Orphan Drug Designations: 1st Quarter 2015 In Review

This is the first in a series of Blog Posts on the review of the first quarter of 2015 for orphan drugs and rare diseases. The first quarter of 2015 continues the success for orphan drug development and rare diseases.

This Blog Post will compare the number of FDA Orphan Drug Designations (ODDs) of the first quarter of 2014 versus the number of FDA ODDs of the first quarter of 2015. The chart below identifies the number of FDA ODDs in each month of 2014 and 2015.

Observations

•   Increase in the # of FDA ODDs every month of the 1st Quarter of 2014 compared to every month of the 1st Quarter of 2015

•   The Grand Total # of FDA ODDs more than doubled from the 1st Quarter of 2014 (50) compared to the 1st Quarter of 2015 (113)

•   Increase of approximately 126.0 % in the # of FDA ODDs for the 1st Quarter of 2014 compared to the 1st Quarter of 2015.
